Death In The Family
A death in the family can be a life changing event for all of the survivors left behind. Death can be a very difficult thing to deal with especially for people that don’t believe in life after death. The finality of death is especially hard for some teens and children to deal with. It is difficult for parents to help their children understand that the dead family member will never be coming home.
In some cases a death in the family will lead a family to a religious leader. Because a death in the family is such a difficult thing to understand some type of professional counseling may be a good option to consider.
Change in Behavior after a Death in the Family
It is important to be observant to any signs of change in teens and children after the death of family member. There may not even be any obvious changes. It is always good to communicate with the teen to see how they are handling the death. If they are struggling they may just need someone to help them process the death. There have been cases of teens that have made dramatic changes after the loss of a loved one.
The reasons for the change are unique to each situation. If a teen is having a hard time with a death in the family it is important to get them some type of help. The problem left unchecked will usually not go away.
Death and Family Dynamics
When a parent dies unexpectedly, it can turn a child’s life upside down. The child or teen may feel resentment and hate for others. In order for the child or teen to deal effectively with a death it may be necessary to seek professional help. A child that grows with feelings of unresolved anger and hatred can turn into a pretty miserable adult.
Another factor to consider happens when the surviving spouse re-marries. This new substitute parent may be seen as an intruder by teens or children. It is difficult for the children to understand that the remaining parent has needs also. Navigating through this situation can be difficult and may require some professional help.
Help for Families Dealing with Death
There are books and websites that can provide help with the logistics surrounding the death of a loved one. Some people have extended family members that can help them deal with the death. For many people the death and funeral are easier than the day to day events that happen week’s even months after the funeral is over and extended family members have left. When viewed through a more eternal perspective death tends to be less difficult to deal with. For those of us that believe there is life after death it is difficult but not unbearable.
