DUI and DWI and Your Teen

There have been many deaths and severe accidents created by an inebriated teen behind the wheel of an automobile. The danger created by a teen driving under the influence of alcohol is not to be minimized. Should the teen be pulled over while driving intoxicated they will more than likely be cited with a DUI or driving under the influence charge or even worse DWI or driving while intoxicated. Each state has specific parameters that determine the levels of intoxication of drunk drivers. The actual number is not as important to understand as the consequences associated with a troubled teen convicted of either driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated.

DUI and DWI Attorneys

Laws vary from state to state as do penalties associated with DUI and DWI infractions. An Internet search for DUI Attorney or DWI Attorney followed by the state you live in will generate a list of potential law firms to choose from. It is always a good idea to have counsel when involved in any type of legal defense. Like anything, if an attorney specializes in something he will more than likely be more experienced than an attorney that practices general law or business law. It may be a good idea to ask the attorney approximately how many cases he has handled previously. It is important that the DUI or DWI Attorney is able to communicate with your troubled teen.

Consequences of DUI and DWI

As mentioned previously, driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated penalties and laws vary state by state. A person convicted of a DWI or DUI in Oregon may be subject to a different set of consequences than a troubled teen convicted in Florida. In any event it is safe to say that a teen that is convicted of either offense in any state will be facing some life changing events. The hope is that when the troubled teen finishes paying restitution for the crimes he or she has committed they will be committed to never drive while or after they have been drinking. It is better for a teen to be caught and convicted of driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated than to be convicted of automobile homicide.

Drunk Driving Laws and Troubled Teens

"An ounce of prevention" regarding teens and drinking can save a lot of heart ache and legal troubles. It is wise to discuss drinking with your teen even if they say they don't drink. Many parents make arrangements to pick their teen up "anytime anywhere" rather than have them ride with an intoxicated driver or they themselves get behind the wheel. This can be a challenge when parents at sleeping and they receive a call at 2:30 a.m. to go and pick up their teen. It is imperative that the parents not only respond, but respond in a positive manner so the teen will not hesitate to call the next time they need a ride. The best way to keep a teen from ever needing a DUI or a DWI lawyer is to never get behind the wheel when they have been drinking.
