Family Counseling
Family counseling is an effective option when a family is struggling with issues that require an outside party. A person looking in from the outside usually has a less biased position than anyone else. In most cases if someone in the family is going through counseling, others in the family will also benefit from it. When the family attends counseling together they can work on issues that the entire family needs to deal with. The individual counseling afterwards can help each person learn to deal with issues that apply only to them. Family counseling can be facilitated by a religious leader or a professional counselor that specializes in family counseling.
Religious Family Counseling
The difference between religious family counseling and family counseling is the person guiding or leading the counseling. Some people believe that their religious leader is best equipped to help them deal with family issues. Other less religious people will have more confidence in a person that is experienced and educated to deal with family issues. Both type of family counseling can be effective. It may be good to interview a few professional family counselors and religious family counselors to determine which one feels right.
Participation in Family Counseling
A major hurdle that usually plagues most families is getting everyone to commit to family counseling sessions. It can be a nightmare to schedule counseling sessions at a time convenient to everyone and the family counselor. Someone will usually have to give something else up to make the family session. Since teens are usually the most reluctant to go they will be less likely to give anything up. The teen will usually try to use every excuse in the book to get out of any type of counseling. In some cases the teen may even say things that are not true to manipulate the session. This can be costly and counter productive. Any type of counseling including family counseling requires that all parties involved are sincere in their efforts to improve.
