Serotonin is a chemical that the body produces to send a signal letting the body know that everything is all right. Some people may need a combination of medications and psychotherapy. The most important thing to remember is that there is help. When the events causing the trauma are not taken care of or changed there is danger that other problems may occur. In some cases PTSD left untreated may result in depression, substance abuse, panic disorder, possibly even suicidal thoughts and ideations. Some people may need to evaluate the situation that is creating the stress. For example if a marriage is abusive marriage counseling should be sought. The person being abused in the relationship may even need to leave the abusive spouse to keep from developing a serious disorder.
