Teens And Shoplifting
Teen shoplifting happens in every town large and small across the country. Teen shoplifting like adult shoplifting causes prices to go up for everyone. The merchant must reconcile his books and the end of the year if goods are missing due to either teen shoplifting or adult shoplifting he must recoup his expenses. He usually does this through increasing his prices; in essence this makes everyone pay for the stolen goods. Some teens feel like it is "ratting their friends out" if they tell on them. What they may not realize is that the next time they buy something, they will be paying for part of their friends stolen goods through increased prices. A more serious concern is teens that shoplift to support drug habits. They fence or sell the stolen goods and then purchase drugs with the money they get.
Teen Shoplifting and the Law
When teens shoplift they are taking a risk of ending up with a shoplifting record. A shoplifting record may sound like a rather insignificant event, but enough small criminal events and the teen may end up with a bad reputation and a more serious police record. A judge will often let first time offenders off with a warning, and even second time offenses may not be that serious. Every time a teen goes before the judge he or she will consider what the teen has done in the past. Like dominoes if the teen has enough small problems with the law, they may all eventually crashing down on them eventually.
Teen Shoplifting and Fitting In
Another tragedy is when a teen feels the need to fit in so badly they begin to shoplift clothing to impress their peers. This type of shoplifting is significantly more dangerous as the goods being stolen can get pretty pricey. Every state has different laws determining what major and minor offenses are. A few dollars can some times put the stolen goods into a major crime rather than just a simple shoplifting charge. The teen will usually take more than one item increasing the chances of converting a small charge into a more serious offense. Another side to teen shoplifting and fitting in is stealing, just to prove a teen is bad enough to hang out with a particular peer. Peer pressure then becomes a major contributor to teen shoplifting. This is why the friends a teen chooses are so important.Teen Shoplifting Summary
If your teen is caught shoplifting, it is important to do a little research to see if they have been shoplifting previously and not gotten caught. Another important fact would be to find out who they shoplift with. If a teen is continually getting in trouble with a particular group of friends, it would be wise to help them move to a new set of friends.
