At-Risk Teen Expelled From School
One of the most frustrating calls for a parent to take is from the school principal telling them their troubled teen was expelled from school. If you have had this happen to you and your child you may not know where to turn for help. One of the main problems you will face is figuring out what you can do in order for them to continue their education. Usually the school will provide curriculum in order for them to continue while at home. This may not be the road you want to take because the troubled teen may not understand what they are trying to learn.
Teens who are expelled from school usually have behavior problems that caused them to get expelled in the first place. As a parent and guardian it is your job to figure out what to do in order to get their lives back on track. Some of the main reasons teens get expelled could have been a result of fighting, cheating, bringing a weapon to school or even calling the teacher names.
One thing you can do is consider options such as residential troubled teen boarding schools that are designed to help your at-risk teen not only get caught up in school but also help them change their behavior. When a troubled teen gets sent to a private boarding school the staff and teachers will figure out a plan of action that is tailored to your specific child. Some boarding schools even have teens graduate early and get a good start in college.
If your child has recently been suspended or expelled below are a list of things you should do:
- Stay calm
- Sit down and discuss with your teen what happened
- Punish them by taking away certain items such as a phone or car
- If behavior doesn't change find alternative ways to educate your child
