How Should I Punish My Teen? Teenage Discipline
As a parent one of the hardest things to do is discipline or punish your teenage son or daughter. They are not a toddler so the punishment must be tailored to the age of your teen. We have come up with a list of tips and suggestions you can try in order to show your teen that you are in charge and they must follow your household rules.
- One of the best things to do is take away all electronic devices and systems. This would include their phones, playstations, phones and computers.
- Restricting time with friends. This also can include extra curricular activities at school. Let them know they will not be able to participate in their basketball game if their behavior continues to be negative. Usually coaches and teachers will agree and help you with this.
- If your teenage son or daughter is over the age of 16 and you have given them a car, take it away. Let them know they need to follow the rules or they will have to ride the bus to school.
- One of the best and oldest forms of punishment is by grounding them. This could be for a couple hours after school to a whole weekend.
- Last but no least is by giving them extra household jobs and chores. All teenagers hate to do chores and if you let them know what they did is wrong and extra chores will always follow, they will try harder to follow the rules.
If you have tried all of these things and their behavior doesn't change you may have an at-risk teen. Teens who have the attitude, "I don't care", need extra love and attention. There are many different reasons your teen is showing signs of defiance. Your teenage son or daughter may have depression and the next step you need to take is letting a psychologist or therapist talk to your teenager to figure out whats wrong.
Many parents have tried sending their troubled teens to an out of state boarding school dedicated to changing and helping their teens with behavioral issues. These boarding schools also provide education where some teenagers have been able to graduate early. Give us a call today and we can help you find a behavior modification school today.
