Teens Addicted To Video Games

Nowadays, teens have become obsessed with playing games. Although, whether they are actually addicted to it or not, was not clear until a recent survey was made by a researcher of Iowa University. The study found that around 8.5% of the players showed an addictive stance towards playing games. Teens usually spend countless hours in front of the television or the computer playing games and many of them might be unaware of the fact that they are already addicted to it. The parents of such teens also face dilemma as they are unsure of what to do with this habit.

Some parents take a tough stance and completely ban any kind of games inside the house; however, this might be a little too harsh initially. Parents must first try to talk to their children and find a solution to decrease the teen's obsession. Initially, limiting the teen's playing hours would be a perfect solution. In this way, then teen's addiction to the games will also start diminishing significantly. The parents should also try to divert the attention of the teen to other more creative things; they can enroll the teen into a language class or send them to a summer camp, which obviously does not have any gaming facilities.

Teenagers who are addicted to games may start demonstrating absurd behavior and they may be withdrawn from the other people in the house. Prolonged hours of gaming have also been found to have ill-effects on the teen's mood. They also become quite impulsive and react to situations in which they normally do not. Parents need to look out for such kinds of absurd behaviors. However, some symptoms may not be easily noticed by the parents initially. If the parents do figure out their teen's addiction, they need to apply a simple plan which will eventually diminish and then wipe out then teen's addiction.

The parents must first talk to the child and reduce the gaming hours, but not completely stopping it. Next the parents need to engage the teens into some other fun and engaging activity. The teen must be given the freedom to choose the activity which they like and are good at. Family outings can be increased to make the family bond stronger. The support of the family plays a crucial role in the helping the teen. If necessary the parents can also opt for guidance from an experienced counselor, who has relevant experience in handling such cases.
